A sole ticket purchased in the state of Maryland has secured an estimated $731.1 million, marking the fourth-largest Powerball jackpot in history. Simultaneously, the Mega Millions jackpot remains up for grabs and has surged to an estimated annuity value of $970 million, positioning it as the third-largest lottery jackpot in the country, according to CNN.

The Maryland Lottery declared on Thursday that the winning Powerball ticket originated from the Coney Market in Lonaconing, a small town with just over 1,000 residents in the western part of the state. The fortunate ticket holder faces a choice between receiving the jackpot as a lump-sum payment, amounting to $546.8 million, or opting for the full $731.1 million in instalments over the next 29 years.

The winning numbers for Powerball were 40, 53, 60, 68, 69, along with Powerball 22, and Power Play multiplier 3X. Thirteen additional tickets secured at least $1 million, matching the first five digits without hitting the Powerball. Notably, one of these winning tickets earned $2 million as the holder had chosen the “Power Play” option.

Following the Powerball triumph, the subsequent jackpot has diminished to an estimated $20 million for the upcoming drawing scheduled for Saturday, as reported by AP. Meanwhile, the Mega Millions jackpot has skyrocketed to $970 million after an unprecedented stretch of months without a winner. Nevertheless, the odds of clinching the multi-million dollar prize stand at one in 302,575,350.

Winners of both lotteries have the flexibility to receive their prize either as a lump sum or as an annuity paid over 30 years. The cumulative jackpots may undergo further escalation depending on the number of tickets sold nationwide before the next drawing.

In April of the previous year, amid the initial surge of coronavirus cases in the United States and the implementation of widespread lockdowns, Mega Millions and Powerball had to adjust their starting jackpot amounts and minimum jackpot roll increases due to a significant decline in ticket sales, as reported by AP. While both lotteries initially declared that starting jackpots would no longer be $40 million and the minimum increase between drawings was eliminated without a top winner, ticket sales rebounded towards the end of the year. The combined total for the two jackpots has now reached its highest point since October 2018, when Mega Millions reached $1.537 billion, and Powerball hit $687.8 million.

Powerball is played in 45 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Mega Millions tickets are available in 44 states, along with the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
